Salmagundi is the English term used to describe salads served as early as the 17th century which were often comprised of several different types of ingredients ranging from poultry, seafood, fruits, vegetables, nuts & blooms & were generally topped with an oil & vinegar.  Today we call these salads Chef or Cobb salads and the term salmagundi is used to describe any varietal grouping or hodgepodge.

Fries or Chips? In North America it is common for sliced potatoes to be called fries, where as in Ireland, New Zealand and Australia they are referred to as chips.  In Britain, chips refer to thickly sliced potatoes & fries indicate a thin cut... where we call thickly cut potatoes wedges!! In North America, we refer to chips as either paper thin cut potatoes or fried mashed corn  ... Confused yet?!
